Coffee & Chocolate Fundraisers
LVA/BEC has had one major annual fundraising event since 1998, "Coffee & Chocolate". The event has continuously grown each year, from its beginnings as a small office gathering to today’s large public event in Downtown Buffalo. Major sponsors have been Starbucks Coffee Co., Fowler’s Chocolates and Barnes & Noble. One of the highlights of Coffee and Chocolate is a basket auction where guests bid on various gifts and services, which are paired with books of a similar theme.

Ice Cream for Literacy! 2008
The weather was much more cooperative for the second annual Literacy Volunteers Ice Cream Social. Sunny skies and decent temperatures beat out last years snowy evening as Literacy Volunteers again teamed up with Cold Stone Creamery to raise awareness and funds for literacy. On Wednesday, April 30th the Cold Stone ice cream scoopers were busy as many friends of LV came out in support. Also helping serve up the cool treats were Channel 7’s Aaron Mentkowski along with Channel 2’s Mary Friona, Heathery Ly and Matt Pearl. Local musician Scott Celani also joined in the fun behind the counter. Kids were also entertained by special guest Buster Bison. A portion of all ice cream creations sold that evening were donated back to Literacy Volunteers. A special thanks to Cold Stone Creamery owners Steve and Julie Van Vliet for their continued support. We hope to see everyone again next year!

Scrabble® Fest 2007
Literacy Volunteers Crowns New Scrabble Champion

Words, words, words.... Shakespeare himself would have been proud of the wordsmiths who competed in our Scrabble Fest 2007 Fundraiser. The competition was fierce this year as a new champion prevailed. John Prior barely beat runner up Susan Herdic in a close final game at the Scrabble-Off held March 11th at Barnes & Noble Booksellers. But John first had to go through 12 year old Sam Scheiten, this years youngest competitor, to make the finals.

For the second year in a row, many friends of Literacy Volunteers opened their homes for the first round of parties held over two weekends in February. Special recognition goes to Judy Lopez del Moral whose party netted the most donation for Literacy Volunteers with $550. In all the event raised over $3000 which will go directly into fighting illiteracy in Western New York.

A special thanks to all our 2007 party hosts:
Tracy Diina, Jeff & Shelley Hirshberg, Judy Lopez del Moral, Christine Smolen, Don Lawrence and the Amherst East Rotary, Charisse Freeman, JoAnn Doerr, Julia Hall, Lenora Henson, Bob Krohn, Ida Scaglione.
