Literacy Volunteers Teams up for the Harlem Book Fair Buffalo 2006
Buffalo, NY Chapter One The Harlem Book Fair Buffalo, a Celebration of the Niagara Movement Centennial, began in 2005 with a Literary Success! The Buffalo story continues on Saturday July 8, 2006 from 11:00 am 7:00 pm in downtown Buffalo.
The Harlem Book Fair Buffalo, a family event that promotes the love of reading and literacy, is customized for Buffalo highlighting the city’s diverse community and historical experience. The 2006 historical feature is the Underground Railroad. The book fair, Free and Open to All, will feature readings, book signings, interactive children activities, seminars, panel discussions, a variety of vendors and the opportunity to meet and greet well-known authors.
The exciting line-up includes a special presentation by Paul Robeson Jr., author of the new book A Black Way of Seeing: From "Liberty" to Freedom. Paul Robeson is the son of Paul Robeson, the legendary American artist, scholar, and activist. In addition, some of Western New York’s literary notables, such as Lauren Belfer, Virginia Deberry and Ishmael Reed will participate in special sessions at the book fair. The following authors will share historical insights about the Underground Railroad - Betty DeRamus, author of Forbidden Fruit: Love Stories from the Underground Railroad, and Fergus Bordewich, author of Bound for Canaan: The Underground Railroad and the War for the Soul of America. Award winning children’s author Sharon Draper will discuss her new book; Cooper Sun and award winning children book illustrator and artist Jerry Pinkney will share highlights of the stories behind his many beautiful illustrations. Mr. Pinkney and his wife and author Gloria Pinkney will be featured at the Albright Knox Art Gallery’s Gusto at the Gallery on Friday July 7, from 5:00 7:00 pm. The book fair will also highlight a diverse group of local and regional authors from Rochester and Albany N.Y. and Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.
