Fundraiser to Benefit Literacy Volunteers Of Buffalo & Erie County

(Buffalo, NY) – Shea's Smith Theatre and Literacy Volunteers of Buffalo & Erie County are partnering on a used book sale at Shea's Smith Theatre on Friday, April 25 from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. and Saturday, April 26 from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. The books will be priced at a fair value for used books and any proceeds will benefit the adult and family literacy programs of Literacy Volunteers of Buffalo & Erie County. Any books that are not sold during the spring sale will be donated to Literacy Volunteers of Buffalo and Erie County.

The sale will include thousands of gently-used hardcover and paperback books in genres of all kinds, such as romance, mystery, thriller, biography, essay, children's books and textbooks. The collection includes recent best sellers and historical classics. There will also be a limited number of used computers for sale.

The books were collected during The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee hosted by Shea' Theatre in January. Collections also include donations made directly to Literacy Volunteers.

"We're also pleased we made Shea's Performing Arts Center audiences aware of the efforts of Literacy Volunteers to increase literacy in the Buffalo community," said Tracy Diina, executive director of Literacy Volunteers of Buffalo & Erie County. "I'm touched to see the outpouring of support for our book drive, people were so generous in their donations and I'm glad books will get into the hands people who need them so much".

Customers coming to the book sale the morning of Saturday, April 26 are also welcome to participate in one of Shea's Historic Tours.  Let by volunteer docents, these tours give a detailed account of Shea's architecture and history.  Tours will start at 10am and 1pm and last roughly one hour.

Shea's Performing Arts Center, located in Downtown Buffalo, originally opened as an elaborate movie house in 1926 under the direction of Michael Shea and is a National Historic Site. Literacy Volunteers is the region's sole provider of free, one-on-one adult and family literacy services. For more information visit www.sheas.org or www.literacybuffalo.org.
