After-School Tutoring
Literacy Volunteers of Buffalo and Erie County operates an after-school literacy tutoring project in conjunction with Catholic Central Schools at its St. Monica’s Scholars Program for Girls. Since 2003, Literacy Volunteers and Catholic Central girls’ school (grades 6-8) have collaborated in after-school reading, writing, speech, and listening activities to improve English Language Arts among 35 African-American girls (22% come from African refugee families). We operate daily literacy and learning activities programs at the school with paid staff and teachers from the school.
Since starting the program in 2003, NYS standardized test scores for Level 3 (i.e., “meeting the standards”) English Language Arts at Catholic Central increased from 0% in 2003 to 14% in 2004. Likewise, scores for Levels 1 and 2 (i.e., “failing” or “not meeting” the standards) significantly declined.
