Literacy Volunteers Opens First Satellite Office
The Stephen Keller Family Literacy Center
This Fall, Literacy Volunteers celebrated the opening of the Steve Keller Family Literacy Center in partnership with Goodwill Industries of WNY at 1119 William St. in Buffalo. This unique initiative helps families address the need for improved reading ability for both adults and children in the Buffalo community as part of Goodwill’s Family Enrichment Center. The Center provides services to adults who may experience difficulty in moving into private sector employment because they cannot read well enough to access good paying jobs in the local economy. This unique project also addresses the reading needs of children in participating families to help break the “cycle of illiteracy”.
People can come to the Family Literacy Center at the same time they receive job readiness and work experience training at Goodwill Industries and improve their reading skills. This unique arrangement provides free babysitting for parents of young children, as well as food pantry services. Mental health and addiction counseling services will soon be available; in addition to currently offered legal assistance with life issues like landlord/tenant disputes and other housing issues, bankruptcy and consumer credit matters; and others.
The Steve Keller Family Literacy Center offers free assessment of reading levels and needs, a place for tutors to meet in small groups or one-on-one with learners, internet access and free books for families to take home and share. The Center expects to serve up to 150 adults and families per year. Literacy Volunteers thanks the Community Foundation, Rotary Buffalo, and Goodwill Industries for making this special initiative a reality for the benefit of Buffalo parents and children.
