Supplemental Educational Services (SES) Tutoring
After-school tutoring is available for students in grades K-8 in English Language Arts (ELA) through the federal No Child Left Behind Act. Services are available for students who use English as a second language, who may need help with basic reading skills, and who just want to excel! We are open to students with disabilities, and/or an IEP also, to the extent that reasonable accommodations can be made available.
Students are tutored in a small group by a certified teacher and, whenever possible, with extra help from a trained youth tutor. Learning materials are geared toward meeting the state’s learning standards and achievement test requirements, but also to develop a love for reading and learning. Parents are key partners in getting an edge on reading.
To participate, the student must be eligible for free or reduced price lunch and attend an SES approved school [a school in its second year of “In Need of Improvement” (SINI), or a School Under Registration Review (SURR)]. Tutoring is offered at many convenient sites across the community and takes place two days per week for an hour over 30 weeks. Usually starts in mid-October for the school year and may be offered in Summer. Pre-registration is required and the Buffalo City School District must approve the application.
