Family Literacy Programming
Family literacy is an educational strategy developed by the National Center for Family Literacy to meet the needs of at-risk families. It brings parents and children together to learn and acknowledges the important role that parents have in their children's language and literacy development. Family literacy is based on the idea that a child's first and most important teacher is the parent. It builds on parents' desire to do what is best for their children, fostering in families a love of learning that will last a lifetime.
Family Literacy has been developed through Literacy Volunteers of America to address the needs of the community. It aims to provide literacy support to families in need of such services. In the Buffalo area, the high poverty rate, high number of low income families and high number of youth in need of additional literacy support is acutely evident. Literacy Volunteers of Buffalo & Erie County works to shift the balance by providing high quality family literacy programming that serves the entire family’s literacy needs.
Literacy Volunteers of Buffalo & Erie County offers several Family Literacy programs:
• After-School Tutoring
• Enterprise Charter School Youth Mentoring Program
• Family Literacy Events
• Supplemental Educational Services (SES)
• Teen Peer Tutoring
