Becoming a Literacy Volunteer:

If you can read these words, you have the power to enlighten, to offer dignity, to build confidence, to make dreams come true and to create a reader.

There is no better way to improve a community than by giving people the power to improve their future. Helping an adult learn to read—or learn to speak English—is a profound experience that will enrich your life, your student’s life as well as the entire community.

At Literacy Volunteers of America/Buffalo & Erie County we provide all the training you need to become a tutor in the Basic Reading Program, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Program or Youth Mentoring Program. Once trained as a tutor, our volunteers meet individually with their adult student for two hours per week. They conduct their tutoring sessions anywhere in the community – such as a library, coffee shop or community center – at a time that is convenient for both parties.

Volunteer and tutoring opportunities include:

Basic Reading Tutor

ESOL Tutor

Youth Mentor (at Enterprise Charter School, 275 Oak St., Buffalo, NY)

Tutor for Neighborhood Literacy Drop-in Centers

Conversation Group Leader (English as a Second Language)

Correctional Literacy Tutor

Workshop Trainer
