Becoming a Literacy Tutor - Requirements & Benefits - Steps to Becoming a Literacy Volunteer - Tutor Forms - Orientation Schedule
Becoming a Literacy Volunteer:
If you can read these words, you have the power to enlighten, to offer dignity, to build confidence, to make dreams come true and to create a reader.
There is no better way to improve a community than by giving people the power to improve their future. Helping an adult learn to reador learn to speak Englishis a profound experience that will enrich your life, your student’s life as well as the entire community.
At Literacy Volunteers of America/Buffalo & Erie County we provide all the training you need to become a tutor in the Basic Reading Program, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Program or Youth Mentoring Program. Once trained as a tutor, our volunteers meet individually with their adult student for two hours per week. They conduct their tutoring sessions anywhere in the community such as a library, coffee shop or community center at a time that is convenient for both parties.
Volunteer and tutoring opportunities include:
• Basic Reading Tutor
• ESOL Tutor
• Youth Mentor (at Enterprise Charter School, 275 Oak St., Buffalo, NY)
• Tutor for Neighborhood Literacy Drop-in Centers
• Conversation Group Leader (English as a Second Language)
• Correctional Literacy Tutor
• Workshop Trainer
