Becoming a Tutor Requirements and Benefits
Benefits to Becoming a Tutor:

• Utilize our tutor library filled with a wide selection of teaching materials.
• Enjoy the comforts of our student/tutor lounge for your tutoring sessions or to work on your tutoring lessons. Our lounge is kept stocked through a generous donation from Wegmans.
In order to become a tutor, a candidate must:
• Be 18 years of age or older (16 or older for Youth Mentoring Program)
• Have at least a high school diploma or equivalent
• Be able to speak and understand the English language well enough to communicate clearly and show proficiency
• Attend a mandatory orientation as well as tutor training workshops (professional teachers are exempted from some of the training)
• Be willing to commit to tutoring approximately 2 hours per week for at least one year
• Agree to meet at an mutually agreeable tutoring site
• Accept the Literacy Volunteers policy of non-discrimination; demonstrate appropriate behavior when working with a student
In order to remain a tutor, a candidate must:
• Attend scheduled sessions regularly, arrive on time and notify the student or Literacy Volunteers office of planned absences
• Be prepared for the tutoring sessions with lesson plans and appropriate materials
• Be focused on the learner’s goal and responsive to the learner’s requests regarding preference of instructional materials, learning strategies and the tutoring environment
